The sources of water pollution are diverse, including natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions and severe storms, but the majority of water pollution is caused by human activities. These include sewage and wastewater discharge, industrial pollution, runoff from agricultural activities, and dumping of chemicals and hazardous waste. Agricultural runoff is a significant source of water pollution, as it can transport fertilizers, pesticides, and animal waste into waterways, causing algal blooms and other pollution.

Fortunately, there are solutions to water pollution. Adopting sustainable practices like reducing water usage, controlling runoff, and using natural fertilizers can help reduce pollution from agriculture. Urban areas can also adopt sustainable development practices by promoting green infrastructure that can reduce runoff, such as rain gardens and green roofs. Industries can implement cleaner production techniques, use less toxic chemicals, and adopt sustainable practices to reduce their impacts.
